Layoffs at the search engine behemoth HQs continue. After axing about 1000 employees across various divisions, the company is now laying off ‘hundreds’ from its advertising sales team. First reported by Business Insider (paywalled), citing a memo from Google VP Phillip Schindler, the news was confirmed by Google’s spokesperson, Chris Pappas.

In his statement to the Verge, Chris Pappas stated that a few hundred roles are being eliminated globally as a part of the change. Per the Business Insider report, Schindler hinted at layoffs affecting primarily the Large Customer Sales (LCS) unit. The LCS team sells ads to large businesses. The Google Customer Solutions team (GCS) sells ads to a smaller client base. With the LCS gone, GCS will now become the core advertising sales team, looking over the entire clientele. Per another Business Insider report, Google had laid off some LCS staff earlier in October 2023. Pappas remarked that the company goes through a rigorous restructuring every year to provide the best services to its Ads customers. The customer base is mapped to relevant specialist teams and sales channels. As a part of this restructuring, hundreds of roles will be eliminated globally; however, the impacted staff can apply for open roles or elsewhere in Google, Pappas quipped.
